Information about Reading, Pennsylvania

Founded in 1743 by Richard and Thomas Penn (sons of William Penn the founder of Pennsylvania) planned the town of Reading with Conrad Weiser. The name was from the town of Reading in England in honor of the Penn's home. Upon the creation of Berks County in 1752 the town became the county seat.

Early on the region was being settled by emigrants from southern and western Germany. The Pennsylvanian German dialect was spoken in Reading well into the 1950s and later. By the time of the American Revolution, the area's iron industry had a total production which exceeded England's, an output that would help supply George Washington's troops with cannons, rifles, and ammunition in the Revolutionary War.

Once, it was home to one of the largest railway systems in the country. While Reading has experienced economic downturns, efforts are being made to revitalize the city's down-town area with projects such as the Sovereign Performing Arts Center, the Miller Center, and the Goggle Works Center for the Arts. Reading has much to offer visistor and is conveniently located, about an hour away from Philadelphia, 2 and 1/2 hours from New York City, 40 minutes from the Amish country and about an 45 from Hershey park and Dorney Park which offers a lot of oppurtunities for day trips for tourists staying in the area.

Hagelgans & Veronis, LLP. represents clients throughout Central PA, including residents of Columbia, New Holland, Lititz, Lebanon, Adamstown, Reamstown, Shrewsbury, Oxford, Malvern, Chester County, Dauphin County, Lebanon County and Berks County.
